Mindrolling Today
General Information
Mindrolling Monastery Og Min Ogyen Mindrolling—the Place of Ripening and Liberation—is one of the six main monasteries of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism. Mindrolling is renowned as a center, where the complete teachings of the Buddhadharma are upheld with the utmost authenticity and purity.
Mindrolling Monastery is located in the foothills of the Himalayas in Dehra Dun in North India.
Mindrolling Monastery is administered as Charitable Society registered in India under the Societies Registration Act of 1860 as ‘Nyingmapa Mahabodhi Charitable Society’.
The Origins
The vision for Mindrolling originates from the Great Masters Choegyal Terdag Lingpa and Lochen Dharmashri, who founded monastery in Tibet in the 17th century.
Source of Dharma

Mindrolling is known throughout the Tibetan Buddhist world as one of the main centres for the preservation and spread of the Dharma in general, and most particularly, the sacred Vajrayana rituals of liturgies, music, chants, dances, mandala drawing and melodies. The Mindrolling Monastery has been renowned as the chö-go — source of profound transmissions and sacred rituals of the Nyingma School of Tibetan Buddhism and proclaimed as such by the great masters of the past.
The sacred rituals and ceremonies
The vast tradition of study, practice, and realization is carried forward to this day. Monastic education, great rituals and ceremonies (drubchen), retreats, and the training of new generations of practitioners, all continue in their authentic form.

Transmissions and Empowerments
The descendants of Chögyal Terdag Lingpa have ensured that the teachings, empowerments, and accomplishments have been passed purely and completely from generation to generation. Since its founding, Mindrolling has been the main seat dedicated to ensuring the continuity of the profound Kama and Terma transmissions and to safeguarding the pure stream of the precious Dharma.

In this auspicious Diamond Jubilee year, marking sixty years since the founding of Mindrolling Monastery in India, the precious Kama transmissions, will be bestowed at Mindrolling Monastery by Kyabje Shechen Rabjam Rinpoche, at the request of Minling Jetsun Khandro Rinpoche. These transmissions of the ripening empowerments along with the liberating oral transmission will take place from end of November 2025 to January 2026.

Ngagyur Nyingma College
Established in 1991, Ngagyur Nyingma College, Mindrolling’s Institute of Advanced Buddhist Studies. (Five Sciences University) where hundreds of monks receive advance training to preserve the unbroken lineage of teachings and pass them on to the next generation of practitioners. It is now one of the largest Buddhist Institutes in existence.
Monastery Campus
Mindrolling monastery has many magnificent examples of buddhist art and architecture. That includes Ngedon Gatsal Ling, the main monastery and practice center at Mindrolling. There are also many shrine rooms including several within the Great Stupa, which constructed to benefit all beings and dedicated to world peace, was inaugurated in October, 2002. In 2016 the Padmasambhava Statue and shrine rooms therein were inaugurated.
Mindrolling Branches
Mindrolling today includes over 300 monks at the monastery, approximately 135 at the shedra and 40 nuns at Samten Tse Retreat Centre.
Apart from the main seat in India, Mindrolling extends through several branch monasteries, institutions, in both East and West.
